Filenymous vs AirDrop
Filenymous takes the AirDrop idea — direct sending, no account — into the browser, on any OS and across the internet. Filenymous is not affiliated with Apple.
Try AirDrop for the web| Criterion | Filenymous | AirDrop |
|---|---|---|
| Devices | Any WebRTC-capable browser (Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS) | Apple devices |
| Distance | Anywhere over the internet (link, QR code or short code) | Nearby devices (Bluetooth / Wi-Fi) |
| Install | None (browser); optional npm CLI and extension | Built into Apple’s OS |
| Encryption | End-to-end (AES-256-GCM) on top of WebRTC DTLS | Encrypted by Apple’s OS |
| Source code | Open source (MIT) | Proprietary |
Which one to choose?
- Between two Apple devices side by side, AirDrop is still the simplest.
- As soon as a Windows, Linux or Android device is involved, or the recipient is far away, Filenymous does the same thing in the browser.
