Direct file transfer

Send one or more files straight from the sender’s browser to the recipient’s, with a link, a QR code or a short code.

Key facts

• WebRTC peer-to-peer: bytes go from one browser to the other, directly or through a TURN relay that only sees ciphertext.
• AES-256-GCM encryption in 64 KiB chunks; the key sits in the link fragment (after #), which browsers never send to the server.
• No server storage, hence no server-imposed size limit.
• Several files per share; add and remove before sending.
• Share by link, QR code or a short code such as 123-456-ABC.
• Optional password: never transmitted (HMAC proof + PBKDF2 derivation mixed into the key); the share locks after 5 wrong attempts.
• No account, free, open source (MIT).

Good to know

• The sender’s tab must stay open until the download completes: closing it ends the share.
• The signaling server briefly sees both peers’ IP addresses and connection parameters (nothing is kept).

How to

1. Open https://filenymous.eu/app/ and drop your files.
2. Click “Start”: a link, a QR code and a short code are created.
3. Send the link; keep the tab open until the transfer completes.
